Misleading Instagram Models

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 8, 2016, 12:43 PM

RANT. Okay, I'm going there, I'm doing this, even though I don't usually post personal opinion on here but I'm so mad.

An Instagram model with over 1 million followers has recently started endorsing shampoo and conditioner by the brand Tresemme. She has stated in her posts that Tresemme 'do NOT test their products on animals and are committed to ending animal testing.'

THAT IS NOT CORRECT.

I am so MAD about this. Not because the company uses animal testing (though of course that sucks, but not what I'm debating here) but because the model is either being misled by the company, who is also purposely misleading people, or she's lying to OVER ONE MILLION impressionable, young followers. And when I posted a (polite) comment stating that Tresemme tests their ingredients on animals, SHE DELETED MY COMMENT.

I LITERALLY WANT TO BANG MY HEAD AGAINST A WALL.

My personal views on animal rights aside (though as a Veterinary Nurse I'm sure you can piece together how I feel about the mistreatment of animals), it sucks SO DAMN MUCH that an influential role model would turn a blind eye to this. To be fair, she's probably signed a contract with Tresemme that she can't back out of now, so even if she actually does some research and realises the product isn't cruelty free, there's nothing she can do anyway.

HOWEVER. Please note: Tresemme can state that the product wasn't tested on animals, because that's true. But it is the INGREDIENTS within the product that have been tested on animals. So do not be deceived by the sly marketing tactics of these massive companies! And likewise, RESEARCH a product yourself before you buy it, rather than listening to paid Instagram models. Don't get me started on those freaking gummy bear hair vitamins or the diet teas.

(ACTUALLY WAIT A MINUTE. I will. One of my favourite YouTubers Cloudyapples made a video about how she was approached by a 'skinny tea' company, asking if she would endorse their product. When she researched it, she realised that it didn't actually make you skinnier. It didn't do much other than aid bloating. She turned down the opportunity and money because SHE WANTED TO BE HONEST. Hats off to her, seriously.)

Here is a comprehensive list of all the companies who test their products and/or ingredients on animals, if you're interested: www.peta.org/…/beauty/co…

Aaannd here's a list of cruelty free brands:www.crueltyfreekitty.com/ultim…

If you agree with animal testing, then fair play. You're entitled to an opinion. However, if you disagree then please share this post to spread the word. Thank you.

How Disney Effects People's Lives

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 8, 2016, 2:35 AM

It's only as I grow older that I appreciate how each individual Disney character influences and shapes people's lives. It's actually a huge responsibility resting on Disney's shoulders. It's important. They are shaping the way kids think and treat people and view others that will effect them way into adulthood.

This is the comment I chose to win my giveaway:

'I relate to Elsa so much it hurts. My little sis is exactly like Anna and I've always tried to protect her and make sure she's safe, even though I don't show how much I love her the way I should. To me, Elsa means knowing how to love yourself and how to come to terms with your flaws, always striving to be better and to make those around you feel protected and loved.' - aozul27

This struck a chord with me in particular as I have a younger sister whom I always want to love and protect, even if I don't show it sometimes. This comment also made me think more about Elsa's character, and how she reflects many people in this age, who choose to lock themselves away from the people they love. Only in the last few years have I realised that this isn't the way to be. People can disappear in an instance (as Elsa discovered) so we should all make the most of the people we love, and also learn to accept our individualism.

Disney has created a world and characters that we can connect to, relate to and learn from. And that's awesome.

Please take the time to read a few comments that struck a note with me! There were so many awesome and inspiring stories, so I'm sorry I can't share them all! Comments are below :) And feel free to share your stories too!

' I love Mulan! Actually, scratch that, I think of her as a role model. She struggled with her sense of identity, and put it all aside in order to keep her father safe. In doing so she challenged gender stereotypes, yet kept true to herself, and showed the younger me that with a strong moral compass and willpower, I can do anything. She is one of the many sources of motivation pushing me to pursue a PhD and work to change the world for the better.' - freckled.hands

'[...]if I had to choose one it would be Esmerelda. I remember watching the movie as a child and being amazed by this very different hero/princess. She wasn't wealthy or royalty, she didn't end that way either. She was a common girl. I loved how she was so confident in herself. She KNOW'S she's sexy/beautiful and a talented performer, and she embraces it, she uses it to help her earn money. But she uses her head and strength to fight for what's right not just for her or her people, but others as well. She has so much love and kindness it amazed me as a child and still to me this day. I hope I have her confidence and strength one day.' - dudeitsberenice

'My favourite Disney heroine is Mulan. The journey she's making in the movie represents my life so well. When I was little I didnt really understand the meaning in Disney movies, but now that I'm older I have really started to get the meaning of every Disney movie, so when I watched Mulan some years ago I noticed that I could relate to her so much. I've gone through some difficulties in my life and there is one line she says that I can relate to really well, when she says "maybe i did this for myself so I could prove to myself that I can make things right, so that when I looked in the mirror I would see someone worth while, but I was wrong, I see nothing". I recognize myself in this because all my life I have fought with my self esteem after beeing bullied alot, I looked in the mirror and saw nothing, and even though I got bullied I never changed to be someone else for anyone else, ive always tried to just be myself. And that has really been my sword in this fight, that ive never given up on my personality! Even though my self esteem about my body were terrible I never gave up on just being ME! So Mulan is my hero because she shows that no matter what difficulties you face in life, you can always fight through them and make it! It will get better and you will be happy again!' -neellee

'Oddly enough, one of my favorite Disney princesses is Cinderella. She's a strong yet underrated character. She's a girl who's been through the ringer in life and still can manage to sing and hope and dream. She's a girl who got her happy ending despite her circumstances. Regardless of the magic used to get there, she earned it in a way.
That's why I like her. She's hard working, industrious, kind, gentle, and knows what she wants. Even if it is to be fabulous for an evening. (Plus, she's a seamstress. So bonus points.)' - narnianswardobe

Temporary Store Closure

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 14, 2016, 6:24 AM

So I'm not gonna bore you with my boring life, but I'm having an unusually stressful time at the moment and I've decided that from 1st March to 30th April my Etsy store will be closed. If you want to purchase postcards/prints/mugs please do so by the end of this month. Don't worry, it's just temporarily closing! :)

I need to alleviate the pressure during this slightly difficult time. I will carry on drawing and posting on social media, and when my store reopens there should be loads of new products, including bags, more phone cases, new postcards and charcoal sketches!!! :D I just wanna enjoy drawing and shiz at the moment, you know?

Speaking of which, if you follow me on Instagram (hannah_alexander24) you will see some of said charcoal sketches :)

Have a great Sunday everyone!! <3 <3

QuickDesign! Series

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 9, 2015, 3:14 AM

Hi all!

I get so many requests to redesign characters, but I don't have the time ;__; So I've created a series on my YouTube channel called 'QuickDesign!' which consists of me quickly sketching and colouring a redesign of a character. It's only a sketch but should be enough to placate everyone out there ;) And inspire cosplayers!

First up in the series is Korra!

This is an audience based series, so if you have a suggestion of who you'd like to see, please leave a suggestion in the commentS either here or on the video! A new redesign will come every other Friday :)

Commission Slots: OPEN

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 28, 2015, 2:15 AM

EDIT: CLOOOOSSSSEEEDDDD!!! 10 slots are filled, plus a waiting list of 11 people!! If you send a note now I'm afraid I can't consider you for a slot, sorry :( Don't worry, I will open them again in the future! <3

To all you lovely people out there: I've got two weeks off work starting 03/08/15, and have decided to open up very limited commissions slots.

I get asked about commissions a lot, but working as a full time veterinary nurse means I get very little free time. I've always struggled with commissions in the past simply because of time allowance. So this time, I'm opening TEN slots, first come first serve, and the commissions are FIXED SUBJECT AND FIXED PRICE.

:bulletpurple: What I mean by fixed subject: they're going to be in the style of my redesigns. Full body, full coloured original redesigns of a character of your choosing. There will be a simple background, as illustrated in my past redesigns.

:bulletpurple: IT IS ONE SLOT AND ONE CHARACTER PER PERSON. The character can be anyone you want - it can be you, your fave anime character, your OC - anyone! I'm even happy doing new designs for any character I've previously redesigned e.g. Ariel.

:bulletpurple: The charge is $30 upfront via paypal.

:bulletpurple: Once it's complete, you will be sent the original copy of your work for you to do with as you please!

:bulletpurple: I will not be offering any other art service, e.g. watercolour paintings.

:bulletpurple: If I get all ten done within the first week I will consider reopening another few slots, and those will go to whoever is first on the waiting list.

:bulletpurple: Although you can apply for a slot now, I won't start painting until my vacation time starts!

:bulletpurple: You can have some input on how you want the design to turn out, but I would prefer having creative freedom when it comes to designing, so I won't be taking any specific direction. But if you have a colour scheme in mind, or want certain items/symbols added, then I'm happy to include those :)

:bulletpurple: I will only offer refunds if: you request a refund before I've started your piece, or if I cannot complete your commission. If you're unhappy with the outcome for whatever reason, you won't get your money back, but I can assure you that the redesign will be of the same quality as all my others! What you see is what you get :)

If you want to apply for a slot, then please SEND ME A PRIVATE MESSAGE VIA DEVIANTART MESSENGER. Contacting me via any other social media will not count. Please include which character you would like to be redesigned and if you have any special requirements.

If you have any questions please leave them in the comments below. I will update this journal when all the slots are taken. Thanks everyone! :)

My Tribute to Miyazaki!

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 12, 2015, 2:30 AM

I'm so excited to announce that my art will be featured in an exhibition: 'Spirit Of The Wind 2015: A Tribute To Hayao Miyazaki' in California, sometime this summer, run by 3tArts !

It's a huge honour to be selected for this exhibition because I, among millions of others both in and outside of the art world, have been deeply moved and inspired by the boundless creativity of Miyazaki and his team. I love how they depict their characters: always strong but not without vulnerability, always selfless and adventurous. The movies are full of spirit, and there hasn't been a single person I know who hasn't been helplessly sucked into each world, from beginning to end.

So now the issue is I actually need to create something for the exhibition. So tell me: who or what is your favourite Miyazaki character and why? There are so many to choose from ;___;

Please feel free to share your ideas on what you'd like to see me create!

(Honestly, there are so many to choose from I don't even know where to start. I love the style and setting in Ponyo, because I love anything to do with the sea. I have a huge soft spot for Spirited Away; I was maybe 13 when it came out and it had a huge impact on me. Princess Mononoke (the character) is one of my favourites because she's so wild, strong and free spirited. Kiki tugged on my heartstrings like no other movie and she can FLY. But I loved the connection between the two protagonists in Laputa: Castles in the Sky. Uggghhhhhh halp)

Stolen Artwork Part III

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 9, 2015, 1:19 AM

Here we are again.

This time it's a Chinese company selling on my watercolour painting as cheap linen prints:

www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CRCRAP?re…;

Here's my stolen work: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/216112…

They've taken mine down but the store is still active with other people's artwork! Let's try to get their store shut down!

And not just mine! I recognize a lot of the artwork but don't know the artists. If you know who the art belongs to please let me know, or contact them! Additionally, I would massively appreciate it if any of you with an Etsy account could report the shop and report the item.

As I've said before, I put a lot of time and effort into all my work, so to have it stolen without a thought for the artist is painfully frustrating. Please help me take this thief off the market!

Thanks :)

Disney Art Nouveau - POSTCARDS!

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 4, 2015, 10:19 AM

Hi all!

Some of you may or may not know that I've recently started selling postcard packs of my Art Nouveau Costume Designs!

Art Nouveau Costume Designs I by Hannah-AlexanderArt Nouveau Costume Designs II by Hannah-AlexanderArt Nouveau Costume Designs III by Hannah-Alexander Art Nouveau Costume Designs IV by Hannah-Alexander

You can find them in my :star: Etsy Store :star:

They come in packs of 3, 6, 9 and soon, 12! Right now, I don't have Pocahontas, Kida or Jane, but they should be arriving next week.
They start at $7! You can use the Coupon Code JANSALE15 for 10% off :)

There's a bit of a backlog of orders at the moment, but I'll strive to get them posted within a week of you purchasing <3

Secondly! I've been getting so many requests for people wanting to cosplay my designs. Let it be known: THAT IS FINE. You can cosplay away :) I'm deeply flattered that you want to take the time to turn my 2D ideas into the real deal. So go ahead! Get sewing! Cosplay to your heart's content! If you do finish and photograph the designs, PLEASE SEND ME PICS!! I would love to see :D All I ask is that you tag the usual credit onto anything that goes online, and if you go to a convention it would be lovely if you spread the word about my art :)

Thirdly! I've recently started a Youtube Channel, dubbed Hannah Paints. It has short (usually around 3 minutes) Photoshop tutorials, plus time-lapse videos of both digital and watercolour work. I'm a total n00b so any feedback you have would be really helpful. Like, what would you like to see on the channel? What would be helpful to you as an artist? What would be fun to watch? Do you think I should do voiceovers or sticks to the subtitles? If you had time I'd really appreciate your opinion.

I'll leave with you a few of vids as examples. Thanks for reading :)

Print Packs

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 12, 2014, 10:42 AM

I've been using Redbubble for a while now as a means of distributing art prints, but because they don't offer them in packs I've set up a new site where you can purchase them at a cheaper price than on Redbubble.

:star: :star: Hannah Alexander Artwork :star: :star:

The site features the entire collection of my Nouveau Princesses, plus a bunch of watercolour art that I don't often post here. Right now the princesses are all one size at 12 x 8 inches, and there's a mix and match option too!

I'll definitely consider expanding the collection there if people are interested, as well as adding other products such as mugs and phone cases which will once again be cheaper than Redbubble. However, if you're looking for individual prints, my Redbubble store is still your best bet.

Side note: I haven't been drawing for a long while but hopefully I'll get back into the swing of things soon!

Art Theft: Part 2

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 2, 2014, 1:55 AM

EDIT: shop owner has now removed artwork! Thanks everyone :-)

---------------------------------------------

I suppose it never ends! Despite putting watermarks on all my work now, these little thieves still manage to sink their grubby claws into it.

Today, it's this person: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PhoneFluf…;

If you have a moment, please report her shop. Even though the other stolen art is familiar, I'm not sure who the artists are, so if you know them, please inform them! Or tell me and I'll inform them

Thanks everyone :)

Features, Flower Meanings and Ellen Page

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 15, 2014, 2:30 PM

I'll be writing a more interesting journal entry soon, but for now, have some filler!

Firstly, just a little update. I'm going be finally completing my Disney Mucha Princess series within the next few months! I'm also going to be redesigning a few of the ones I'm unhappy with. Once they're all done, I'll be selling complete print packs in my Etsy store, as well as gift bags! More on that later.

A lot of people asked me where I get the flower meanings I use in my princess series from. This website has pretty much every flower and their respective meaning you could ever want! So there ya have it.

I also urge you all to go and watch Ellen Page's inspiring, honest and moving speech about sexuality and homophobia. It very nearly had me crying at the end of it. We need more people like Miss Page to represent an often misunderstood and downtrodden part of our society. This video is very much worth eight minutes of your life.

And finally, here is a mini feature for artists that I absolutely adore but don't often get the attention they deserve. Have a nice day :)
