The girl is a princess who agreed to sacrifice her mortal life to save her beloved forest, which was cursed to wither by an evil witch. She is now the heart of the forest; she is neither living nor dead. Without her essence the forest would die. The animals keep a vigilant watch over her form as she slowly becomes part of forest.
