Merida, from Disney's Brave.

Flowers are day lily (Chinese symbol for mother), ferns (means 'magic'), foxgloves (means 'insincerity') and gladiolus (means 'strength of character').

Her dress defies the laws of physics, but at least it looks nice.

The folds are uncommonly lovely, but I'm enjoying your sense of symbolism as much as your beautiful art!  The foxglove and ferns are a nice touch.

I love how you put so much meaning behind the picture. It makes it so much more than just a beautiful work of art. I like how you made her hair solid, and didn't define every single curl. The dress and folds are also quite amazing. keep up the great work! I know you will. :iconmnrthumbsupplz: Hug

That doesn't look much like Merida.
I don't like leaving crabby comments, but after reading your journal entry about women as sex objects, I have to say this doesn't reflect very well on Merida as a character who is supposed to be this strong girl who doesn't give much thought into the way she looks. I understand refining her for the sake of Art Nouveau, but drawing a character as strictly outlined as Merida is a touchy subject. She was purposely made with broad shoulders and messy hair, a plump face with freckles and without huge lashes because of feminist movements targeting popular culture about women being displayed as impossibly skinny, 1-sided and busty archetypes in video games, movies and etc. to appeal to men, representing a false idol for young girls. Merida has imperfections (if that's what we're going to call them) but her whole shindig is ranking courage and determination over her looks. I don't know, I just feel like giving her a tiny waist and perfect-curls is a bit controversial to what you were saying in your journal. Although you havent portrayed her as a sex-object you're still not making her look like the actual character, like what her message tries to get across.

Thanks for your honest opinion! I don't think I've conflicted my journal at all. I like to draw girls in a way that shows their feminine side and I don't think the way I've depicted Merida is demeaning to her persona at all. She's a very beautiful young woman, afterall! Of course, contrary to her personality, I drew her as very refined and elegant not only because that contributes to the art nouveau style but that's the way I like to draw. Imo, I feel that even though she might be much more kept than her original design, she still subtly exudes power and strength and is far above the sex objects I ranted about in my journal. While I disagree with sexualising women to the point of being disrespectful, there's nothing WRONG with femininity. It's difficult balance to achieve!

I understand what you're saying, and you're right, there is nothing wrong (or weak for that matter) with a more feminine approach, but I don't know. I guess I'm just a bit stubborn about the whole concept of Merida being too feminine because that's not what she was targeted for nor what she essentially is. She does consist of some feminine aspects, but in the end that's not the message Pixar/Disney was trying to exemplify to the audience. She's more of a beacon, to small children that look up to her, who tells them they don't have to look a certain 'stereotypically, princessy' way in order to achieve greatness. My personal opinion is that she's quite a bold icon to be changed so much, especially since this is really the first time a Disney princess movie has had a fully feminist protagonist.
But then again I understand that your intentions were completely based on your style and that it has nothing to do with changing the characteristics of her personality.
Like I said it's a very touchy subject, and I do understand what you're getting across to and you have every right to draw and personify a character with your own style. After all isn't that what deviant art is about.
I guess what I meant by comparing your journal entry and this piece was that Sexualizing and demeaning women sexually sets up a false representation of what both sex is and what women are to one group of kids where as creating a feminine archetype can send off the wrong message to another group of kids, telling them in order to be considered pretty to the rest of the world they must fit the template of the feminine archetype.
They are initially separate subjects but they both consist of some sort of manor of objectifying.
I don't mean to come off as rude, and don't think that what I just stated implies directly to you/your piece of artwork. I just was trying to create some sort of representation of my argument that was as straight-forward and non-confusing as possible. It turned out quite harsh but like I said; I understand your reasoning and there is nothing wrong with refining fan-art with your style. I guess I just felt like clarifying my argument.

Meh, it's no problem. Everyone has their own opinion! I can't say anymore otherwise I'll just be repeating what I said earlier. It wasn't my intention to warp her persona, so I apologise if you feel that way.

Nah, I just got the wrong message, it's just that a lot of Merida fan-art tends to get the wrong message about her build/physical appearance, but this was just a misunderstanding. I think your art is beautiful though. So for whatever it's worth my hard-ass criticism comes from a place of caring. I really think it's great when people seek inspiration from Art Nouveau just because it's such a delicate and lively style.
